Everyone who publishes their book wishes for it to sell well. Yet the profit from your book lies elsewhere. A good book will definitely generate you more business.
The previous book did well. I sold 3500 copies of my book in the Netherlands and Flanders. And yet my real profit is not there.
This quote is from one of my more well-known clients. I just came from a meeting where we decided to write a new book together.
And what this author cites as reasons to publish his fifth book soon corresponds with why other entrepreneurs, freelancers, and CEOs tell me to write books.Pure book power!
What power can you develop with your own book?
Once they have written a book, they are more in demand as speakers. The pleasant consequence of this? Because they strengthen their role as an expert, they can also charge higher rates from now on.
Dreaming of a bestseller in the bookstore
Authors often dream of their book on the shelves of Standaard Boekhandel, ranking very high in the Amazon catalogue online, and making a profit from sales to the general public.
But the real profit of a book does not lie in this sale.
A manager, business leader, entrepreneur, and speaker who publishes their book experiences a very different kind of profit. Then the book suddenly proves to be a megaphone to the market and customers you want to focus on.
Publishing a book yields them much more through an indirect route than what a sale in the online and offline book trade could ever bring them.
Assuming, of course, that we are not all writing bestsellers with a print run of over 10,000 copies…
You should know that most authors are already very satisfied when they sell a few hundred books, as the tea sommelier Kristin Van Eetvelt - from the example below - does much better thanks to her own strong commitment and investment.

8x real profit from your book

Reason 1. Keynote speaker
You are in greater demand as a keynote speaker. Event organisers often make their choice of speakers based on books.
Reason 2. New projects
Readers contact you for a project. And you have immediate certainty that this project will fit, because your client links their needs to the content of the book. One of my first authors refers to his book as “my best marketing tool”.
Reason 3. Media recognition
Your name and project reach the media. You are regarded as an expert, even by people who did not know you before. So from the beginning, ensure you have an interesting and media-friendly angle. Try not to focus on everything, but gauge the interest of the media before you start your writing.
Reason 4. Your moment
You create a momentum in which people talk about you and your activity. Extra visibility. Especially when you let the launch of your book thrive on social media.
Reason 5. Higher prices
You can ask higher rates for your work. The more books you sell, or the more media coverage you get,... the higher your status and the more you can charge for keynote speeches, workshops, and consulting assignments.
Reason 6. Thought leader
You have your own content from which you can derive interesting blogs and tweets and create newsletters that get opened and shared.
This way, you grow into a thought leader in your field.
Reason 7. Lead generation
You generate leads by offering (part of) the book for free online in exchange for an email address and company details.
Reason 8. New market
You tap into a new market of customers who did not know you before.
But why should you also write your own book?
Contact a ghostwriter
Did I forget to tell you that you don’t have to work on your book alone?
Few entrepreneurs, managers and CEOs actually have the time to write their own book.
The solution? Ghostwriting.
Are you looking for a good ghostwriter? That is someone who manages to put your thoughts and rough sketches on paper in a clear manner. In recent years, I have more than once been the secret editorial member at the table, the text improver, the interviewer, the final editor.
On this site, you will find a number of books I have contributed to as a ghostwriter, author and publisher.
This also makes it easier for you to write your own book. Finally, your dream in a real book on paper or e-book!
